Secondary Schools Open Boys and Girls Sevens Report – 27 September

The 2017 Secondary Schools Open Boys and Girls Sevens tournament was held 12pm to 6pm on Wednesday 27 September on North Harbour Domain hosted by Marist North Harbour Rugby Club.   12 Open Boys teams and 5 Open Girls teams contested the tournament with the boys in four pools and the girls playing a round robin.   The boys were ranked after pool play into Cup, Plate and Bowl semi-finals and the Girls had a straight 1v2 final after the round robin.   Malia Hemehema of Kaipara College was judged to be the Open Girls player of tournament.

Kaipara Girls swept all before them in the round robin winning all their round-robin games by 30 plus points and Long Bay lost to Kaipara and beat Vanguard, Rangitoto and Massey by 20 plus points.  The Girls final saw Long Bay achieve a closer result but Kaipara was too strong scoring 5 tries to one winning 31-7.  Both Kaipara and Long Bay girls qualify as North Harbour representatives for the Condor National Schools 7’s to be held at Sacred Heart College 30 November to 3 December.

Mahurangi edged Kristin 17-12 in the Bowl semi-final and KingsWay accounted for Albany Senior in the other Bowl semi.  Mahurangi defeated KingsWay comfortably in the Bowl final winning 39-19.

Westlake 2 beat Kaipara in the first Plate semi-final 40-17 and Orewa put away Vanguard 38-12in the other.  Orewa were too strong for Westlake 2 taking out the plate Final 24-7.

Westlake 1, Birkenhead, Rangitoto and Massey qualified for the Boys Cup semi-finals topping their respective pools.   Westlake put away a spirited Birkenhead who started well but Westlake romped away in the second half to win 41-12 and Rangitoto edged Massey in a very tight-semi-final winning 12-5.  Clinical and well organised Westlake 1were too good for Rangitoto winning the 2017 title convincing 28-0 with 4 unanswered converted tries.  Both Westlake and Rangitoto qualify for the Condor sevens.  John Cooper of Westlake BHS was selected as Open Boys Player of the Tournament.

A great day with just one sprinkling of light rain, with good sevens rugby on display and a good vibe amongst the 17 teams present. Thanks to Marist North Harbour Rugby Club for hosting the event and to the Referees Association for providing referees for the tournament mid-week.

The Under 15 Secondary Schools Boys and Girls Tournament will be held on Wednesday 8 November at North Harbour Domain in Term 4.
