Under 85Kg Finals Report – 12 August

300 people travelled to Kumeu for the 2017 Under 85Kg Championship final on a soft track to see a business-like Northcote side carry the day 19-10 over Kumeu.  Kumeu had been the front runner for the season but faltered late in the season as injuries hit but they held on to secure a home semi-final holding off the young and feisty Massey side in the semi’s.   Northcote had built up through the season working their way up the table and defeating the strong Silverdale side at the ‘Dale in their semi , going into the Final with confidence and enthusiasm.

Tied up 3 all early in the first half, Northcote broke the deadlock to take the lead 6-3 with a further penalty kick which they never relinquished.   Northcote was hungry for the win, had the edge with overall territorial advantage and played the better rugby.  During a raid into Northcote territory, Kumeu spun the ball wide but Northcote second-five and captain Jimmy Napier intercepted a long pass and scampered away to score out wide but that was no issue for first-five Nick Burcher to convert for a 13-3 scoreline.  Kumeu countered with a converted try from forward pressure to pull the score back to 13-10 late in the first half.

In the second half play ebbed and flowed in the mid-field with both sides taking their chances but both defended vigorously with numerous strong tackles and clearing kicks.   A serious injury forced a field change after the adjacent Presidents game finished.  An exchange of penalties was won by Northcote with two difficult shots successfully kicked by the reliable Burcher.  Kumeu were unable to secure any more kicks and Northcote jubilantly celebrated with a 19-10 win and won their third Championship for 2017 following on from the Premier 1 and 2 wins.

The U85 Plate final was a very close encounter with Takapuna hanging on for a win just edging East Coast Bays 25-24 at Onewa.  Takapuna were dominant for much of the game but East Coast Bays never gave up and stayed in the game to the end.
