North Harbour men’s road to Rotorua national 7s 2018.

The coaching team of Amasio Valence ‘Head coach, Willie Walker ‘Assistant coach’, Dean Rice Trainer, Jaco Pretorius ‘Physio, Jona Tuitoga ‘Hydration, Deano Allnutt ‘Team manager.

The 12 players selected, Penetana Ben Smith (C) Ethan Roots, Curtis Reid, James Fiebig, James Little, Pita Volavola, Sailosi Vatubuta, Patrick Pati, Lewis Gjaltema, Mark Telea, Todd Doolan, Nicholas Smith (C)

After day one, we were leading our pool with wins over Hawkes Bay 19-12, Otago 40-7, Manawatu 33-5. Total of 92 Points for, and 24 against. The team was feeling pretty good about day one, as you all know its all about day 2. Pita Volavola was the only casualty on day one with a foot problem.

Our Point Scorers – North Harbour 19 v Hawkes Bay 12, Pita Volavola, Sailosi Vatubua, Lewis Gjaltema Tries, Pita Volavola 2 Conversions

North Harbour 40 v Otago 7, Pita Volavola, Sailosi Vatubuta, Lewis Gjaltema 2, Nicholas Smith 2 Tries, Pita Volavola 3, Nicholas Smith, 2 Conversions.

North Harbour 33 v Manawatu 14, Penetana Ben Smith, Curtis Reid, Sailosi Vatubua, Lewis Gjaltema, Nicholas Smith Tries, Nicholas Smith 4 Conversions.

Day two, we had Wellington first up minus Pita Volvola who didn’t pass a fitness test. With the new subbing rules, you could use players twice, which would suit us before the first ¼ Final v Wellington. We managed to be in front at half time 7-5, with Harbour starting to control the game. After a few handling errors to North Harbour in the second half, Wellington managed to force pressure into errors. As much as the Harbour men keeping trying, it just wasn’t our day.

¼ Final, North Harbour 12 - Wellington 15.

Plate Semi Final, North Harbour 14 – Auckland19.

Tournament placing 8th

I would just to thank all the North Harbour 7s management team and players who contributed in our build-up to Rotorua 2018. The result wasn’t what we had asked for, but that is rugby 7s at the highest level. Our day will come.

Special thank you to John McKittrick, North Harbour Rugby union staff, David Gibson, Tina Gates, Denis Henderson, for all their work behind the scenes.
