2014 Secondary School Girls Final

2014 Secondary School Girls Final

2014 Secondary School Girls Final Report

Hato Petera College hosted the Secondary School Girls final for 2014 with Kaipara College travelling in from Helensville to contest the final.

A good turnout of 100 supporters from both schools were entertained by a fast moving and skillful display by both teams in fine weather and on a good track.  Hato Petera were top seed qualifier but Kaipara was first to score and maintained the lead throughout the game to win 35-26. Kaipara had the speed and an eye for the gap with a great finisher out wide in Caitlyn-Rose Cox had a great day scoring four tries and was player of the day for Kaipara.

Kaipara relied on the forwards to drive through and find gaps for their play makers but the Kaipara forwards defended well making their tackles.  Kate Williams made the plays from half-back for Hato Petera scoring a hatrick of tries, and making some great defensive tackles to be their player of the day, with Pia Tapsell also playing well. Captain Taylor Campbell led Hato Petera well in defence and trying to catch up but Kaipara’s captain Susana Frost kept her girls focused in shutting down their opposition, turning the ball over and finding the gaps for the tries to be scored.

Kaipara led 20-14 at the break with four unconverted tries and another three in the second half with Hato Petera scoring a brace in both halves plus succeeding with three conversions with their kicker having a better day than Kaipara’s.  Long serving referee Ian Leslie controlled the game well and whistled full time with the score at 35-26 for Kaipara to secure the trophy and winners medals for 2014.

The secondary school girls rugby group of 120 players from several schools now go into a programme of skills and trials sessions for the provincial representative programme in August/September followed by the sevens programme commencing in late September going through to October.
