The 2016 junior tournament finals day was held at Helensville on Sunday 28 August in brilliant sunshine and on a firm track with 1000-1200 people in attendance throughout the morning. The sidelines were packed, well behaved and enjoying the final junior rugby fixtures of the season. The rugby was of a high standard with skill, vision and intent on show in every match. Both prize-givings were standing room only with Mitre 10 Cup players Ray Niuia, Hapakuki Moala-Liava’a and Toketa (Hani) Fatai in attendance. Ray gave a great speech to the young players thanking them for the efforts, thanking the coaches, managers, parents and the JRC and, extolling to the young players never to doubt themselves and always strive for the top. Ray gave an example to the players of North Harbour Mitre 10 Cup captain James Parsons and the effort he has put into to wear the black jersey – set your goals and go for it.
JRC Chairman Paul Evans advised that he and his committee were very happy with how the tournament progressed through to the finals, in particular the inaugural year of the J1 regional tournament which produced some great rugby developing players and coaches alike.
Helensville did a great job hosting the finals day with great food (bbq’ed Venison sandwiches no less!) and plenty of it, well set up fields and every facility available to the 16 teams present for the day. Congratulations and thanks to go to Chairman Nick Mulvaney, Junior Chairman Brooke Painter and their hard-working crew.
