MASSEY UNIVERSITY’S MASTER OF SPORT MANAGEMENT
The increasing professionalisation of sport means there is a growing demand for qualified people to manage and promote sport affairs. From 2015 Massey University’s Colleges of Business and Health will jointly offer a new Master of Sport Management (MSptMgt). The programme can be studied internally at Massey’s Albany campus or via distance learning. With Massey’s flexible study options, you can gain this highly marketable qualification by studying full-time or part-time while you work. However you choose to study, you’ll benefit from Massey’s hands-on learning and strategic partnerships with regional and national sport organisations.
The Master of Sport Management is a practical and professional academic qualification making it unique within New Zealand, as no other University offers a similar qualification in conjunction with health and a business school. It is specifically designed to meet the needs of modern sport organisations, combining both broad business training with specialist sport and health knowledge to give you an excellent basis for roles in all areas of sport management.
The 180 credit sport management-specific qualification consists of 120 credits (4 papers) and a 60-credit professional practice paper of approximately 300 hours, which focuses on the development of the knowledge and skills required by contemporary sport management professionals. A variety of organisations, like Harbour Sport, are possible professional practice placement sites. Students have said that similar papers (Sport Management Practicum) have offered maximum learning and the best overall university learning experience; “I have learned so much sport business knowledge and got incredible personal improvement … It is the most wonderful experience for me at Massey ...” (Flora Hy, Sport Management Practicum student).
The MSptMgt will provide industry practitioners, and those wishing to enter management-type roles within the sport industry, theoretical knowledge and the opportunity to align this knowledge with professional practice. It will satisfy a demand for postgraduate, applied experiential learning programmes for graduates or holders of equivalent qualifications who are employed, or aspire to be, in the sport management profession.
Graduates from the Massey University Master of Sport Management degree programme, will:
• Further develop in-depth knowledge and skills in sport management, either through professional experience or professional educational programmes in areas related to sport management.
• Develop an understanding about the structure and essence of sport throughout New Zealand.
• Gain practical work experience in the sport industry in New Zealand.
• Gain exposure to sport industry professionals through in-class guest lectures, field trips, internships, and researching for assignments.
• Develop an international perspective on sport management.
In 2015, the sport-specific papers (234.731 and 234.732) will be offered in ‘block mode’ meaning that instead of attending weekly sessions as would be done for Project Management and Leading and Changing Organisations, classes will be offered over a two-day block period, as per the dates listed:
234.731 Advanced Sport in the Social Context 18 - 19 March / 13 - 14 May
234.732 Advanced Sport Management 4 - 5 August / 22 - 23 September
152.707 Leading and Changing Organisations Semester 1 Monday 3:00 - 6:00
152.752 Project Management Semester 2 Thursday 6:00 – 9:00

The MSptMgt, as noted is available to part-time candidates and can be studied to completion over a period of five years. Candidates may study as little as one paper per year or the full complement of five papers to meet their personal needs.
Also, from 2016 Massey will offer a Bachelor of Sport Management.
