Silverdale rugby club hosted the 2015 Junior tournament finals on Saturday 29 August. The tournament was played in a different format this season over six weeks on Sundays so as not to impact on normal Saturday morning rugby and a Plate division was added for teams knocked out in the quarter-finals to provide more rugby for all the club selections in the J1 to J4 tournament grades. A great morning’s rugby was held before a big crowd of 1000 positive supporters enjoying the skills and thrills of the rugby demonstrated by the 9 to 12 year old players. With the weather holding out and the officiating by the North Harbour referees being of an extremely high standard, everyone enjoyed the spectacle that is our national sport.
The results saw East Coast Bays comfortably winning the J1 championship 36-0 over Northcote with Mahurangi taking out the J1 Plate 50-24 in a high scoring affair over Kumeu. Silverdale took out the J2 Championship 33-14 from Marist and East Coast Bays won the Plate final 23-19 in a close encounter with North Shore. East Coast Bays convincingly defeated the favoured Silverdale side 19-5 in the J3 championship and Northcote beat North Shore 17-10. Silverdale picked up a second championship trophy being too strong for Northcote 28-14 in the J4 final, and Massey were too good for East Coast bays in the J4 Plate winning 42-19. Marist won the Marty Martinengo Sportsmanship trophy for the tournament.
The individual team Sportsmanship trophies from Saturday morning rugby were awarded as follows:
J1-J3 winner was Northcote J3 Black with Helensville J2 Red as runner-up, Marist J5 Blue won the J4-J6 sportsmanship trophy with Helensville J4 Black as runner-up and, in the J7/J8 grades, Kumeu J7 Green was the winner with Northcote J7 Gold in second place.
