North Harbour Mens B’s traveled to Colin Maiden Park to take on the pacy Auckland Colts and heading into half time Harbour had a commanding lead of 24-10. After some fantastic team work in the first half Harbour’s discipline let them down with a few yellow cards and Auckland Colts bounced back and eventually took the lead. With the weather making handling difficult for Harbour, Auckland Colts hung on for a 30-24 win. Player of the day was Dylan Masters – tries to Nathan Cargo and Daniel Lee with David Hala'ufia kicking 14 points.
The Under 19’s went down 22-17 to Auckland A in their final qualifying game before heading to Taupo next week for the Jock Hobbs Memorial Under 19 tournament. Played at Pakuranga, Auckland opened the scoring with a converted try which Harbour countered with a James Little try. Both sides scored again, with a great try to Dylan Lam but Harbour trailed 12-14 at the break. Harbour winger Nicholas Burns scored to take the lead 17-14 but Auckland came back with a penalty and a late try to take the game.
The Harbour Under 18 side won 19-17 over the Auckland Divisional team. They put together a great first half from a team that had not played together before, with a nice try to Mac Pisi, converted by Miller Hazelman. The team went into the break 11-0 up. In the second half Auckland continued to use their big forwards to rumble it up the middle, which Harbour struggled to contain however Zac Martin scored a nice try running 50 metres to score in the corner to keep the lead. The team defended their line well to hold off a last minute attacking effort by Auckland.
Harbour U16 White were down 5-11 to Auckland South at the break but did not panic and stuck to the game plan. The tight-five took control and gave the backs a platform to use the ball out wide and gained the ascendency. The winning of the game came when Jed Melvin intercepted a pass and sprinted 40 metres to score under the sticks to win 23-16. Jackson Tu'inukuafe and Tiennan Costley also scored tries and Jarrod Ferguson kicked a penalty with Caleb Leef claiming a conversion and penalty.
The U16 Cardinal team started well against Auckland East with the forwards dominating possession and territory to score two tries to hold a 10-7 lead at half-time. In the second half Lockie McNair scored a clever try which was converted by Sam Samu but the opposition struck back immediately with a try of their own. The game became an arm wrestle with both teams trading penalties and Harbour ended the game defending their own line well to win 20-17. Other tries went to Bill Halo and Vili Sio and Brodie Kent kicked a penalty.
The Under 14 White team kicked off their campaign with a solid all round effort but went down to a strong and defensively well organised Auckland South side 5-33. Down 12-0 at half time, the boys struggled to get back in the game. A late try to Ethan Scalabrini gave the boys some confidence but it was too little too late for Harbour.
The North Harbour Under 14 Cardinal team turned up for their first game of the representative season against Auckland East and were quickly on defence. It was only through excellent tackling and defence by the entire team that kept a clean score sheet in the first half. Auckland East started the second half strongly and quickly crossed for 2 tries. To the Harbours side credit they never gave up and pushed hard on attack against the stout Auckland defence. The opposition scored two more tries to take the match 0-24. Player of the day was Evan Williams for Harbour who was tireless in his attacking, scrummage work and tackling.
North Harbour U85’s traveled to Patumahoe for the first game of their 2016 season, against Counties. Starting with the wind Harbour had their set piece going well and looked dangerous when they were stringing phases together however against the run of play Counties pounced on a dropped pass and raced 50 metres to score. Two more penalties to Counties took the score to 11-0 at the break. In the second half a defensive mistake saw Counties score under the posts and Harbour were up against it down 18-0 with 35 minutes to go. Harbour pressure saw a try scored from 40 metres out. However Counties scored two quick converted tries to make the game safe but a good try to Harbour from sustained pressure bought the score to 10-32. Player of the day Jarrod Soar scored a try with the other try going to Adam Southworth.
The Womens team and U18 Girls had a bye.
