QBE Harbour name its team to face the Steelers

Coach Steve Jackson was in an optimistic mood as he confirmed his side to play the opening game of the Mitre 10 Cup competition against Counties Manukau Steelers tomorrow night. "We have had a good pre-season and the boys have taken on board all the key things our coaching group were expecting. Of course you would always like more time, but we feel pretty happy with where we are at right now." says Jackson. "We are really pleased with the outcomes in the pre-season, but are also aware that this guarantees nothing and there is a strong desire within our group to start the comp with a win - something we haven’t achieved in the last few years"

"There is no question we have a big task ahead of ourselves. Counties are a big physical side who will look to dominate the contact area. We need to execute our game plan and the have trust in the structures that we have put in place. Sticking to our processes, and what we know works for this group, is critical to our success".

The QBE North Harbour side named, is a real blend of experience, some returning faces  and youth. The forward pack has the size and experience to match Counties with a hard working front row and strong ball carrying options throughout. Jackson has elected to play with his full compliment of available Super Players, who have all now had at least one game under of the new “tackle” laws. The named squad includes 8 debutants – 4 in the starting 15 and a further 4 on the bench.

Should Chris Smylie (named in the reserves) take the field it will be his 50th game for North Harbour. The mix of youth and experience in this group, will give us energy and urgency, but we will also need composure from our leaders at the critical moments in the game"

"We are also excited to watch the Secondary School 1st XV Final between Westlake and Massey - this should be a cracker of a game, as there will be huge support from both schools. “Our best wishes to both Teams.".

The Union have some fantastic new initiatives planned for all home games this season at QBE Stadium including a Big Screen, a Members Lounge and some exciting halftime entertainment. Gates open at 4.45pm with the Secondary School 1st XV Final starting at 5.15pm, and the Mitre 10 Cup game at 7.35pm. Tickets can be purchased at Gate A from 12pm on the day, or go to www.harbourrugby.co.nz to buy online.
