Schools Challenge Shield

The Schools Challenge shield was implemented in 2014 by the NHSSRU Management Committee to provide more competitive interest in the lower grade competitions.  The shield is defended weekly by the lowest grade or lowest ranked team playing  at home of the holding school and is typically defended by 5th, 6th and 7th grade teams.

If two teams from a school are in the same grade and playing at home the defender is the B team or the lowest on the standings table if the teams even in strength by selection.  The school with the most successful challenges and defenses in a season wins the shield and their tenure is recorded on the shield.  Westlake took out the shield in 2014 and Mahurangi in 2015.

This year Westlake 6A took the shield from Mahurangi 6th on the third Saturday of rugby in the first competition games and they have successfully defended with several of their teams for 5 weeks to date – 5B, 6A, 6B and 7th  Green.  This Saturday 2 July, 7th  Red will attempt to defend the Schools Challenge Shield against Rosmini 7th Red, Rosmini Red is one point behind Westlake Red in the 7th grade standings with Rosmini holding a better points differential so it will be a great match-up on Westlake 3 at 9.30am.
