Three from Three in Pre-season

Three from Three in Pre-season

QBE Harbour wrap up their pre-season phase of their build up with a 17-14 win over a stubborn Hawkes Bay side that provided a good test for our boys. Once again Coach Steve Jackson and his Assistant Daniel Halangahu went into the match with a deliberate plan, looking to test both their resilience, their defensive structures and their ability to adapt to change. Halangahu was happy with his charges. "We deliberately played some guys out of position to see how they would cope, as this is a likely scenario we will face over the next few week. We were really impressed with how they coped, with Daniel Hilton Jones playing at inside centre really catching the eye. The North Shore clubs centre, was a catalyst to getting our backs firing in the first half and certainly showed no issues with playing in that slot. Murphy Taramai also had a strong game at 8, providing plenty of impact and a great connection with the back line."

It was the first time the clubs Super players had been exposed to the new laws, and they showed an understanding of the changes required albeit their instincts sometimes got the better of them. "I had a quick chat to James (Parsons) as he came of the paddock" comments Halangahu "and he was constantly having to pull himself back from latching onto the ball, something he did so well throughout the year. He is learning fast, so I don't see it being an issue". QBE made a good start to the game creating plenty of opportunities and finally dotting down in the 18 minute thanks to the finishing of Afa Faatau. That try was followed by some nice interplay in the forwards that resulted in Dylan Lam crossing the chalk and it was  5 minutes before the break when Bryn Hall scampering over. Halftime QBE Harbour 17 Hawkes Bay 0.

The second half saw Hawkes Bay apply a lot of pressure, with Harbour's defensive system tested and the reserve bench emptied. Whilst Hawkes Bay did come away with a couple of tries, Harbour held them off and more importantly showed great resolve in recording its third win on the trot. The team now return to QBE Stadium and will continue their build to next Thursday first competition game against Counties Manukau at home.
