JACKO GIVES THE THUMBS UP AFTER A GOOD HIT OUT.....
North Harbour Rugby ITM Cup wider squad took on the Counties-Manukau Cavaliers in their first pre-season hit out of the season at Massey Park in Papakura on Wednesday night.
The game enabled Head Coach Steve Jackson to give 27 of his targeted players a run and let them show their wares. From the kick-off the Harbour boys were under the pump, repelling sustained attacks from the Cavaliers and holding fast for almost 10 minutes in their half. A quick break then put the Harbour boys on the front foot and 3 phases later in the corner for their first try of the evening.
The game continued to be competitive, although the Harbour pack and strong work in the midfield saw Harbour score two more unanswered tries before the break, with Counties scoring on the stroke of half time. Harbour 17-5 up. The second half was less structured with lots of turnovers and a couple of long range tries from both sides. Harbour ran out 31-22 at the final whistle.
Steve was pleased with what he saw. "The players I expected to front-up did, and I was delighted to see a couple of other players that have caught my eye recently also take the next step." The defensive effort was strong in patches and the boys certainly showed the physicality I was looking for. All-in-all a good start."
The next game is scheduled for 3 weeks time
